Good to know

Context matters for pronouns, question words and basic concepts in Spanish. Subject pronouns such as Yo, Tú and Él can be omitted when the verb form and context identify the subject. Using them explicitly can signal emphasis or contrast.

Dónde and Cómo keep their written accents in direct and indirect questions. Cuando has no written accent on this card; the interrogative form needs one. Cualquier comes before a singular noun of either gender. Cualquiera can stand alone when the noun is understood.

Rules to remember

  • Suyo agrees with the thing possessed, not with the owner. Its masculine singular form does not reveal the owner's gender.
  • Nadie before the verb makes the clause negative on its own. After the verb, it normally requires a negative word before the verb.
  • Cantidad and Profundidad are feminine nouns; Volumen and Origen are masculine. Their articles follow these genders.
