Good to know

When describing places in the city in French, Tour changes meaning with gender: the feminine noun means a tower, while the masculine noun can mean a circuit or a turn. Hôtel means a hotel, but Hôtel de ville is the town hall.

Banlieue refers to the suburbs, while Périphérie is the outer part of a city. Neither word by itself means a poor neighbourhood. Animé describes a lively place, whereas Bondé means packed with people. Miteux describes somewhere shabby or run-down and conveys a negative judgement, rather than simply saying that a place is old.

Rules to remember

  • Musée is masculine despite its ending in -ée. Ville, Gare and Rue are feminine. The final letter alone does not reliably indicate gender.
  • In Quartier résidentiel and Zone résidentielle, the adjective follows the noun and agrees with its gender.
  • Environs and Égouts are already plural forms. They take a plural article when used with a definite article.
