Good to know

When talking about clothes in Portuguese, Roupa usually refers to clothing collectively. In Portugal, Camisola commonly means a sweater or a sports jersey, and Fato means a suit in this topic. Calças de ganga is the usual term for jeans.

Experimentar roupa and Provar roupa both describe trying clothes on. Cair bem describes a garment sitting well or looking good on someone; it does not simply mean that the size is correct. Ficar apertado means that a garment is tight on someone, so it concerns fit rather than appearance alone.

Rules to remember

  • Camisa and Saia are feminine; Vestido and Pijama are masculine. The final -a does not guarantee feminine gender.
  • Calças and Óculos take plural agreement, even when referring to one pair.
  • In Roupa branca and Roupa preta, the adjective follows the noun and agrees with its feminine singular form.
