Good to know
When learning body parts in German, the difference between der Bauch and der Magen matters: the first names the belly or abdominal area, while the second names the stomach, an internal organ. Pain in the belly does not necessarily mean pain in the stomach.
The word der Hals can refer to both the neck and the throat, depending on context. der Finger refers to a digit on the hand, while der Zeh refers to a digit on the foot. Similarly, das Bein names the leg, while der Fuß names the foot.

Rules to remember
- The article marks grammatical gender: der Kopf is masculine, die Hand is feminine, and das Auge is neuter.
- A final -e does not determine gender: die Nase and die Lunge are feminine, but das Auge is neuter.
- German nouns start with a capital letter. In der Rücken, ü is part of the spelling; in der Fuß, ß follows a long vowel.
