Good to know
Names for body parts in Italian can distinguish an area from an organ. Pancia is an everyday word for the belly, while Stomaco names the stomach as a digestive organ. Dito can refer to a finger or a toe; context tells you which one is meant.
Gender and number can also be unexpected. Mano is feminine despite ending in -o. Labbra is already plural and refers to the lips. Braccio is masculine in the singular, but has a feminine plural when referring to the arms of the human body.

Rules to remember
- Most nouns here ending in -o are masculine, and most ending in -a are feminine. Mano is a feminine exception.
- Dente, Cuore and Polmone are masculine, while Pelle is feminine. The ending -e alone does not identify gender.
- With reflexive verbs for washing, body parts usually take a definite article. A possessive is generally unnecessary when the owner is clear.
