Good to know

When asking for directions in Italian, Scusi and Mi scusi are polite ways to get one person's attention. Proseguire dritto uses an infinitive, the kind of form found in route instructions. Prosegua dritto directly addresses one person formally.

Sempre dritto means to keep going straight; it does not specify a distance. A due passi da qui means very nearby, rather than literally two steps away. Mi sono perso uses a masculine singular participle. A woman speaking about herself needs its feminine singular form, while a group needs a plural form.

Rules to remember

  • In Al semaforo and Alla rotonda, the preposition combines with the definite article. The resulting forms reflect the noun's gender.
  • Punto di riferimento becomes Punti di riferimento in the plural: only the first noun changes.
  • In Strada chiusa and Strada alternativa, the adjective follows the noun and agrees with it in the feminine singular.
