Rules to remember

  • Fourchette and Cuillère are feminine nouns; Couteau and Plat are masculine. The final letter alone does not reliably indicate gender.
  • In Plat principal, the adjective follows the noun; in Grande tasse, it comes before it. Adjectives agree with the noun in gender and number.
  • Payer l'addition and Partager l'addition begin with infinitives. In both expressions, the feminine article loses its vowel before the initial vowel of the following noun.
