Good to know

When talking about food in French, Pain and Fromage can refer to an unspecified amount or to a particular kind. A plural form can therefore mean different kinds of bread or cheese, rather than separate portions. Café can name the drink or a café; in an order, it can also mean one serving.

Poisson names fish as food as well as the animal. Poulet likewise names both the meat and the bird. Épicé describes seasoning and does not necessarily mean hot with chilli. Raisins means grapes, while Raisin sec names a dried grape.

Rules to remember

  • Lait and Riz are masculine; Eau and Viande are feminine. The definite article loses its vowel before Eau, but the noun remains feminine.
  • Pâtes, Frites and Haricots are plural forms. With Haricots, the initial h blocks both article elision and liaison.
  • In Pomme de terre and Huile de tournesol, de links the main noun to a complement that identifies its type.
