Good to know

Vocabulary for food in Spanish varies by region. Patata is common in Spain for potatoes, and Jugo is usual in much of Latin America for juice. Frijoles and Porotos both refer to beans, but their use varies by country.

Some labels need context. Res can refer to a head of cattle, so it does not always name meat. Ternera refers to veal or meat from young cattle in food contexts. Dietético describes foods intended for particular dietary needs; it does not automatically mean low in calories.

Rules to remember

  • Agua is feminine. Because its initial vowel is stressed, the singular definite article directly before it has the same form as the masculine article. Adjectives describing it still take feminine forms.
  • Leche, Sal and Miel are feminine, although their endings do not show it. Learn their gender with the noun.
  • Uvas, Pasas and Galletas are plural forms on these cards. Use plural determiners and adjective forms when describing them.
