Good to know

When discussing environment and ecology in French, Changement climatique covers changes in climate more broadly, while Réchauffement climatique refers specifically to warming. Polluant describes something that causes pollution; Pollué describes something that has been affected by it. The two adjectives describe different roles, rather than different degrees of pollution.

Recyclable means that something can be recycled, not that it has already been recycled. Durable can mean long-lasting or sustainable, depending on context. In environmental discussions, it often refers to practices or development that can be maintained over the long term.

Rules to remember

  • Biodiversité and Flore are feminine nouns; Écosystème and Biocarburant are masculine. The ending -e alone does not tell you the gender.
  • Engrais and Processus end in -s in both the singular and the plural. No extra -s is added for the plural.
  • In Ressources renouvelables and Pluie acide, the adjective follows the noun and agrees with it in gender and number.
