Rules to remember

  • Dor, Febre and Tosse are feminine nouns. Diagnóstico and Tratamento are masculine. The final vowel alone does not reliably show a noun's gender.
  • In Receita médica and Ressonância magnética, the adjective follows the noun and agrees with its feminine singular form.
  • Ir ao hospital contains ao, the contraction of a + o. Ir às urgências contains às, the contraction of a + as; the written accent is required.
