Good to know

Family vocabulary in European Portuguese distinguishes marriage from other relationships. Marido and Esposo both mean husband, while Companheiro can refer to a partner without implying marriage. Namorado denotes a boyfriend and does not by itself mean fiancé.

Tenho dois irmãos can mean that the speaker has two brothers or two siblings, depending on context. The masculine plural can include people of different genders. In Pais divorciados, the plural of Pai can refer to both a mother and a father.

Rules to remember

  • Many family nouns form masculine–feminine pairs with -o and -a: Tio and Tia, Sobrinho and Sobrinha. Genro and Nora use different roots.
  • In O meu irmão mais velho and A minha irmã mais nova, the article and possessive agree with the relative’s gender, not the speaker’s.
  • In Família reconstituída and Família monoparental, the adjective follows the noun. The accent in Família marks the stressed syllable.
