Good to know

In conversation in Portuguese, the form of address depends on the relationship between speakers. Podes ajudar-me? addresses one person informally; Pode ajudar-me? uses a third-person form for more formal address. Poderia repetir, por favor? makes a request more tentative and polite.

Puxar conversa means starting a conversation, often to break the silence. Ficar sem palavras describes being unable to speak because of surprise or strong emotion. Dar à língua is an informal expression for chatting, sometimes with a suggestion of talking too much.

Rules to remember

  • In Pode ajudar-me? and Pode explicar-me de novo?, the pronoun follows the infinitive and is joined to it by a hyphen.
  • The adjectives in Estou confuso and Estou perdido are masculine singular. Their endings change when a woman describes herself.
  • Foi um mal-entendido has a singular noun; Evitar mal-entendidos has its plural. The noun keeps its hyphen and adds -s in the plural.
