Good to know

In discussions of psychology in Portuguese, Humor can refer to a person's emotional state, not just something amusing. Vontade can mean willingness or willpower, while Desejo names a wish or desire. Their meanings overlap, but the two words are not interchangeable in every expression.

Confiança can describe trust in someone else or confidence more generally. Autoconfiança specifically concerns confidence in oneself. Empatia involves understanding another person's feelings or perspective; it does not necessarily imply agreement. Compaixão focuses on concern for another person's suffering, often with a wish to help.

Rules to remember

  • Frustração, Ansiedade and Reciprocidade are feminine nouns and take the article a. Nervosismo is masculine and takes o.
  • Psiquiatra and Terapeuta keep the same form for men and women; the article changes between o and a.
  • In Sentir-se bem and Sentir-se confiante, the pronoun se is attached to the infinitive with a hyphen. The pronoun changes according to grammatical person.
