Good to know

For texting and messaging in Portuguese, Enviar mensagem and Mandar mensagem both describe sending a message; the latter is common in everyday speech. Trocar mensagens describes an exchange, so it involves messages going both ways. Encaminhar mensagem means passing a message on to another recipient.

Mensagem lida indicates that a message has been marked as read; it does not tell you whether the recipient will reply. Gravar áudio means recording sound, while Enviar áudio means sending it. Recording and sending are separate actions, so a recording can exist before it is sent.

Rules to remember

  • In Mensagem lida and Mensagem não lida, the participle agrees with the feminine singular noun. The negative word comes immediately before the participle.
  • Responder à mensagem contains the preposition a combined with the feminine article a. Responder a mensagens has a plural noun without an article, so there is no contraction.
  • In Aplicação de mensagens and Filtro de mensagens, the head noun comes first; de mensagens specifies its purpose.
