Good to know

When talking about feelings and emotions in Portuguese, Saudade expresses longing for someone or something absent, sometimes mixed with fond memories. Mágoa describes emotional hurt or sorrow. Remorso is painful regret over something one has done; Culpa can also mean responsibility for a mistake, without naming a feeling.

Chateado is informal and can mean annoyed or bored, depending on the context. Ficar com o pé atrás means becoming wary or suspicious. It describes an attitude of distrust rather than a literal movement of the foot.

Rules to remember

  • Nervoso, Calmo and Preocupado are masculine singular adjectives. Their feminine forms replace the final -o with -a.
  • Feliz, Triste and Indiferente have the same singular form for masculine and feminine. They still change in the plural.
  • Com medo, Com raiva and Com ciúmes use a preposition followed by a noun. These phrases do not change to match the person's gender.
