Good to know
When describing emotions in French, Excité can express agitation or enthusiasm and can also have a sexual meaning. Énervé usually suggests irritation or nervous agitation, not simply enthusiasm. Gêné describes someone who feels awkward or embarrassed, without necessarily feeling guilty.
Déçu describes a disappointed person, while Déception names the disappointment itself. Avoir la gorge serrée describes a tight feeling in the throat caused by strong emotion, such as sadness or anxiety. Au septième ciel expresses intense happiness; it is an idiom, so the reference to the sky is not literal.

Rules to remember
- Adjectives agree with the person they describe. Content and Déçu add -e in the feminine singular; Triste and Morose keep the same form for both genders.
- Émotion and Déception are feminine nouns; Désespoir is masculine.
- Avoir peur, Avoir faim and Avoir sommeil use a noun without an article. The verb changes form to match the subject.
