Good to know

In descriptions of nature and landscape in Portuguese, Campo can mean a field or the countryside, depending on context. Relva names the low grass covering the ground, including lawns. Mar and Oceano are both masculine nouns, despite their different endings.

Amanhecer, Entardecer and Anoitecer can be verbs or masculine nouns. Amanhecer refers to daybreak. Entardecer describes the fading afternoon, while Anoitecer refers to night falling. The meanings of the last two words overlap: they do not name two strictly separate periods.

Rules to remember

  • Árvore and Flor are feminine nouns, although neither ends in -a. The noun in Paisagem natural is also feminine.
  • In Campo florido and Regiões montanhosas, the adjective follows the noun and agrees with its gender and number.
  • In Vista para o mar, o is the masculine singular definite article. In Sons da floresta, da combines the preposition de with the feminine article a.
