Good to know
The most common adverbs in German often have meanings that depend on context. Noch can express continuation or an additional amount. Erst can mean that something happens no earlier than a given time, or that an amount is lower than expected. Endlich often conveys relief after waiting, while Schließlich can introduce a final step or a reason.
Gerne expresses enjoyment of an activity; Lieber is its comparative form and expresses a preference. Langsam and Schnell can function as adjectives or adverbs. When they describe how an action happens, they do not take adjective endings.

Rules to remember
- Heute, Gestern and Morgen are written with a lowercase initial when used as adverbs within a sentence, except at its beginning.
- When Trotzdem or Deshalb comes first in a declarative main clause, the finite verb follows directly; the subject comes after the verb.
- Darüber, Daran and Darauf can refer to things or situations. In these forms, r appears before a preposition that begins with a vowel.
