Good to know
Among the most common adverbs in Portuguese, Ainda and Já can change meaning with context. Ainda often expresses continuation, while Já can mark something that has already happened. With negation, Ainda can express “not yet”, and Já can express “no longer”. Só often means “only”; its position helps show what is being limited.
Muito, Pouco and Bastante stay unchanged when used as adverbs, but can vary when they quantify nouns. Logo can mean “soon” or “therefore”; the surrounding sentence shows whether it refers to time or a conclusion.

Rules to remember
- Adverbs ending in -mente, such as Rapidamente and Lentamente, do not change for gender or number.
- Multiword adverbial expressions keep their separate words: Em breve, Por acaso and De vez em quando.
- The written accents in Já, Só and Também are part of their spelling. In Às vezes and À frente, the grave accent marks the contraction of a preposition with a feminine article.
