Good to know

Hallo is a common German greeting; Guten Tag suits more formal situations. Schön, Sie kennenzulernen uses formal address, while Und dir? uses informal address for one person. The choice of address depends on the relationship between the speakers.

Gute Nacht is a farewell before sleep or late at night, not an arrival greeting. Bitte can mean “please” or serve as a reply to thanks. Entschuldigung can attract attention or introduce an apology; Es tut mir leid expresses regret.

Rules to remember

  • Guten Morgen, Guten Tag and Guten Abend contain masculine nouns and an adjective ending in -en; Gute Nacht has a feminine noun and the ending -e.
  • These farewells share an opening word and refer to a later meeting: Bis gleich, Bis später, Bis morgen and Bis zum nächsten Mal.
  • Ich heiße and Mein Name ist are followed by a name. In Wie geht's? and Wie läuft's?, the apostrophe marks the omitted e in a pronoun.
