Good to know
In German two-digit numbers above twenty with nonzero units, the units come first: Einundzwanzig means twenty-one. Here, Eins loses its final -s. Watch the shortened stems in Sechzehn and Sechzig, and in Siebzehn and Siebzig: simply joining the full number words would give incorrect spellings.
Large numbers bring another trap: die Milliarde means 1,000,000,000, while die Billion means 1,000,000,000,000. Both are feminine nouns and are written separately from a preceding number word. These names need careful attention: confusing them changes the value by a factor of a thousand.

Rules to remember
- Most names for tens end in -zig, but Dreißig ends in -ßig.
- Ordinals usually end in -te below twenty and -ste from twenty onward. Erste and Dritte have irregular stems. These endings change with gender, case and article.
- Compound cardinals below a million are written as one word: Einhunderteins and Zweitausend. The feminine nouns die Million, die Milliarde and die Billion take -en in the plural.
