Good to know

This group includes both single-word verbs and fixed expressions. Ser and Estar are not simply a permanent-versus-temporary pair: Ser identifies or classifies, while Estar often describes a state or location. An adjective’s meaning can change with the choice of verb.

In its usual construction, Gustar agrees with what is liked, not with the person who likes it. Confiar en includes a required preposition before its complement. Acordarse normally takes a prepositional complement, while Olvidar can take a direct object.

Rules to remember

  • Infinitives have three basic endings: -ar, -er and -ir, as in Hablar, Comer and Vivir. Podría is a conditional form of Poder.
  • In Sentarse and Moverse, final -se marks pronominal infinitives. That pronoun changes with the person and number of the subject.
  • In Confiar en and Tratar de, learn the preposition as part of the expression. Tratar de can introduce an infinitive.
