Good to know
Italian verbs can have several meanings, so context matters. Sentire can refer to hearing or to a physical or emotional sensation. Ascoltare refers to listening with attention. Sapere can express knowing a fact or knowing how to do something, while Capire refers to understanding.
With Piacere, what someone likes is the grammatical subject, not the person doing the liking. The verb agrees with that subject: a singular noun takes a singular verb, and a plural noun takes a plural verb. The person who likes it is expressed as an indirect object.

Rules to remember
- Most infinitives end in -are, -ere or -ire, as in Parlare, Prendere and Dormire. These endings identify the three main conjugation groups.
- Some -ire verbs, including Capire and Finire, insert -isc- before the ending in the present indicative: in all singular persons and the third person plural.
- Reflexive infinitives end in -si, as in Lavarsi and Vestirsi. The pronoun changes with the subject.
