Good to know

When talking about hobbies in French, Temps libre means time available outside your obligations, while Passe-temps names an activity that fills that time. Lecture refers to reading, but Feuilleter means to leaf through a book or magazine, without necessarily reading it closely.

Cuisine can mean cooking as an activity or the room where you cook. Peinture can refer to painting as an activity, a painted work, or paint itself. Context distinguishes these meanings. Tenté describes someone who feels drawn to an activity or offer; it is not the name of a hobby.

Rules to remember

  • Tricot and Jardinage are masculine nouns; Lecture and Danse are feminine. The definite article shows the gender of these words.
  • In Bande dessinée and Mots croisés, the adjective follows the noun and agrees with it: feminine singular in the first phrase, masculine plural in the second.
  • Se relaxer is a pronominal infinitive: its pronoun changes with the subject when the verb is conjugated.
