Good to know

On signs and notices in French, Libre means available or unoccupied; it does not necessarily mean free of charge. Plus de place means there is no room left, despite the absence of a full negative sentence. Hors service marks equipment or a facility that is out of use.

Réservé au personnel limits access to staff, while Défense d'entrer prohibits entry. Inflammable warns that a substance catches fire easily. Its initial letters do not express negation, so this label signals a fire risk, not protection against fire.

Rules to remember

  • Tirer and Ralentir use the infinitive to give instructions without naming the reader.
  • In Ne pas toucher and Ne pas déranger, both parts of the negative expression come before the infinitive.
  • Adjectives agree with their nouns: Route barrée and Peinture fraîche are feminine singular phrases; Animaux interdits is masculine plural.
