Good to know

Italian slang words vary in tone: Ciao is an everyday informal greeting, while Che figata expresses enthusiastic approval and can sound vulgar. Sei uno sfigato can offend, even when friends use it jokingly. Ma dai can express surprise, disbelief or encouragement, depending on tone.

Ci sta can signal that something is acceptable or makes sense. Sono cotto often means that the speaker is exhausted, but it can also describe being infatuated. Stai fresco can warn someone ironically that they are unlikely to get what they want; it is not necessarily about temperature.

Rules to remember

  • Che casino, Che noia and Che figata use the same exclamation pattern: Che followed by a noun, without an article.
  • Sei un mito and Sei uno sfigato contain masculine singular articles; È una bomba contains a feminine singular article. The form uno comes before s followed by a consonant.
  • In Sono cotto and Sono fuso, the final adjectives are masculine singular. Their endings change to agree with the person or people described.
