Good to know

Time expressions in Italian can have different meanings depending on context. Tempo can refer to time or the weather. Ancora can mean that something continues or happens again. Già often marks something as already done, while Appena can indicate that it has just happened.

In negative statements, Mai normally requires a negative marker before the verb when it follows the verb. In questions, it can ask whether something has ever happened. Prima and Dopo locate an event before or after another reference point. Poi typically introduces the next event in a sequence.

Rules to remember

  • Giorno, Mese and Anno are masculine nouns; Notte and Settimana are feminine. Gender cannot be determined from the final vowel alone.
  • Ieri, Oggi and Domani are adverbs: they do not change form for gender or number.
  • Già and Periodicità keep their written accents. Dopodomani is one word, Di frequente is two words, and L'altro ieri contains an apostrophe.
