Good to know

In European Portuguese, Castanho is the usual word for brown, and Cinzento for grey. Preto denotes black, while Roxo denotes purple. The names of Portuguese colors include Rosa and Laranja, which keep the same form with masculine and feminine nouns.

Azul-marinho names a dark blue, while Verde-água names a very pale green. Colour words normally begin with a lowercase letter in running text, even though the cards start with capitals. A colour adjective usually follows the noun it describes.

Rules to remember

  • Branco, Preto, Vermelho and Amarelo are masculine singular forms. With feminine nouns, their final -o changes to -a; plural forms add -s.
  • Azul has the same form for both genders; its plural replaces final -l with -is. Verde also has one form for both genders and adds -s in the plural.
  • Dourado and Prateado describe golden and silvery colours. They agree with the noun in gender and number, without necessarily indicating that an object is made of gold or silver.
